Summer is officially here! And here at mbg we’re all about traveling light and creating space for real transformation.
Whether you’re jetting off to faraway lands this year or just exploring new pockets of your neighborhood, these next few months are reserved for exploration and play. This week, we’ll be sharing our favorite wellness routines that will keep you feeling your best through long days getting lost in new cultures. Today, we’re pinpointing the bare-bone beauty essentials that will give you that dewy glow in a snap.
If vacation's all you ever wanted, why waste your precious time and energy on a crazy skin care routine? Vacation is a state of mind, a time to disconnect, gain perspective, unwind, and in most cases, it's time you want to fully experience before it ends all too quickly. Travel, especially in the summer, comes with an ease Mother Nature doesn't afford us Northern Hemisphere residents the rest of the year.
It's time to go with the flow, take advantage of the season, and pack like a minimalist. Even if you're a beauty aficionado or makeup artist traveling for fun, it's in everybody's best interest to edit their skin care routine while traveling. And during this time of year, the weather is on our side. If you want to try paring back your routine, here's one way to edit it:

1. Face oil

The most important skin care to address on vacation is cleansing and hydrating, and a nourishing face oil can help with both. "No one is immune to the effects of travel or sun exposure, not even Beyoncé." not even Beyoncé. To make the most of your oil, learn how to oil cleanse. Doing this will relinquish the need for bringing a cleanser and a moisturizer. Note oil cleansing requires a fair amount of product, so this is the time to utilize samples, try out a travel kit, or purchase one that isn't going to break the bank.
Product recommendations: The summer hydration set from Biossance covers a travel-size oil and the next item (a face mist), which is just as important, for $25. Indie Lee's travel Squalane Facial Oil is $14, and Cocokind's Organic Chia Seed Face Oil is another TSA- and wallet-friendly option for under $12. All of these oils are light and ideal for cleansing and nourishing.

2. Alcohol-free face mist

Face mist is a traveling must. While you don't need to whip it out in-flight for optimal hydration, misting is crucial if you're using face oil to cleanse and hydrate. Putting oil on dry skin can actually further dehydrate it by preventing moisture from penetrating the skin's barrier—a classic rookie mistake. Spritzing a hydrosol or other hydrating face mist before using an oil to moisturize, however, will keep your skin dewy and plump.
Product recommendations: The aforementioned set from Biossance includes a travel size of the Squalane + Micronutrient Fine Mist, which played a huge part in changing my skin's texture. Another excellent option is Josh Rosebrook's lightly scented Hydrating Accelerator for $22 or the decidedly floral Rose Hibiscus Face Mist by Herbivore Botanicals for $14. Just be sure to choose the 2-ounce size for both.

3. SPF

On vacation, there's no getting around SPF. Using sun protection is an everyday essential, and when it comes to nontoxic and reef-safe sunscreens, some are better than others. No one likes a white cast, so it's best to look for a tinted or colorless version.
Product recommendations: Unsun SPF 30, $29, is a tinted mineral sunscreen made for all skin tones. Fun fact: The company was founded by Frank Ocean's mom, Katonya Breaux! Raw Elements recently released a plastic-free, SPF 30 Tinted Face Moisturizerretailing for $18 that could easily double as foundation for a range of light to medium skin tones, and Marie Veronique's Color-Free Sunscreen (restocking July 1, 2018) is a colorless option for all skin tones.

Bonus: Optional 3-piece "makeup" kit.

Traveling is a good time to let your skin breathe, and, if you regularly wear makeup, it's an excellent opportunity to go barefaced. Time on a trip is (usually) definitive and finite—instead of taking the time to apply makeup every day, spend more time with your travel buddies or focus on some "me" time.
However, if you're traveling to a wedding, work event, or you simply prefer some color to none, here are a few ideas for a minimalist makeup kit. Any of the tinted sunscreens mentioned above can double as concealer and/or foundation.

1. Mascara

A little bit of mascara goes a long way. Check out the best natural mascaras for product recommendations.

2. 3-in-1 cheek, eye, and lip color

RMS Beauty's Lip2Cheek, Jillian Dempsey's Cheek Tint, and Rituel de Fille's Inner Glow Crème Pigment all make excellent buildable eye, cheek, and lip colors.

3. Highlighter

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is a trusty standby for most skin tones. For a dewy look, try a balm like Neal's Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm or Olio E Osso in No. 1.
