Synopsis ::
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in a Brahman family near Calcutta. From his childhood the defeaning lament of the young brides who were burnt alive with their husbands, haunted him. As he started voicing his opinion against this practice, the society started treating him as an outcast. Finally with the help of the British, he was able to oust this practice forever. He also preached people the difference between religion and custom. With the help of the British, he also founded the modern education system and mandated Women education. With his learned contemporaries, he founded the ‘Brahma Samaj’, a society which aimed at the social welfare of the people. Raja Ram Mohan Roy also travelled to the UK to the Queen as the representative of the then reigning Mughal Samrat. The Mughal inferred him with the title ‘Raja’. Ram Mohan Roy’s wife Uma devi was one of his greatest inspirations. He died in UK after suffering from meningitis.
