I Am Not Your Negro is a 2016 American documentary film directed by Raoul Peck, based on James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript, Remember This House. Narrated by actor Samuel L. Jackson, the film explores the history of racism in the United States through Baldwin's reminiscences of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr, as well as his personal observations of American history.[3] It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.
Release[edit]
The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People's Choice Award in the documentary category.[4] Shortly after, Magnolia Pictures and Amazon Studios acquired distribution rights to the film.[5][6] It was released for an Oscar-qualifying run on December 9, 2016, before re-opening on February 3, 2017.[7]
Box Office[edit]
I Am Not Your Negro grossed as of April 6, 2017 $6,838,593 in the United States of America.[8][9] As of April 7, 2017 the movie was estimated to gross more than $7 million.[10] The film industry and review website IndieWire attributed the financial success of the movie to the three factors: 1.) The release date of February 3, 2017 which was less than two weeks after the Academy Award nominees would be announced, 2.) Opening the movie in the United States nationwide in 43 theaters and 18 cities and 3.) Opening in nontraditional movie theaters where I Am Not Your Negro would generate strong word of mouth.[10]
Critical response[edit]
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 99% based on 134 reviews, with an average rating of 8.9/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "I Am Not Your Negro offers an incendiary snapshot of James Baldwin's crucial observations on American race relations -- and a sobering reminder of how far we've yet to go."[11] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 96 out of 100, based on 34 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[12] As at 8th May 2017, the film has a score of 7.04 out of 10 at the Internet Movie Database, based on 4,195 votes.[13]
Joe Morgenstern from the Wall Street Journal says: "the film is unsparing as history and enthralling as biography. It’s an evocation of a passionate soul in a tumultuous era, a film that uses Baldwin’s spoken words, and his notes for an unfinished book, to illuminate the struggle for civil rights."[14]
