There’s an acute and chronic joint pain. The first can disappear within a few weeks, while the latter remains for several weeks or months. The pain ranges from mild to debilitating. Regardless of the intensity, it does interfere with your daily activities.

Even though you should first visit your doctor to determine the right cause of your pain, there’s something you can do to aid your treatment of mild joint pain completely naturally.

11 Home Remedies for Joint Pain

1. Hot and Cold Compresses

The reason why hot and cold packs can relieve joint pain is because the heat helps increase circulation, relax sore joints and muscles, and reduce joint pain. On the other hand, cold therapy relieves inflammation and numbs the part surrounding the aching joint.

Take two towels and wrap the compresses separately. Never apply them directly to the skin.

Put the hot compress on the aching area and let it stay for 3 minutes. Then, remove it and put the cold one right away. Let it stay for one minute and remove it. Do this for 15-20 minutes, several times a day until your joint pain is relieved.

Note – If the aching area is hot, red, or irritated, do not use heat therapy. If you have problems with circulation, do not use cold therapy.


2. Massage

Regular massage improves the blood flow and relieves inflammation, thus reducing the pain in your joints. You can use warm olive, coconut, garlic, castor, or mustard oil to gently massage the affected area and improve joint stiffness, pain, and range of motion.

3. Turmeric

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, help relieve joint pain.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine published a 2009 study which says that the effects of curcumin and ibuprofen are the same when it comes to relieving pain in those with knee osteoarthritis.

Drink a glass of warm milk mixed with a bit honey and a teaspoon of turmeric powder. DO this every day for several days.

Alternatively, you can take turmeric capsules until you get positive results. The recommended dosage is 250-500mg, three times a day.

Note – Turmeric can interfere with blood thinners and aggravate gallbladder issues. Therefore, it’s best to consult a doctor before considering this remedy.

4. Fenugreek

The powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of fenugreek make it an effective home remedy for joint pain, especially if the cause if arthritis.

What you should do is just consume a teaspoon of ground fenugreek seeds and then drink a glass of warm water in the morning. Repeat this every day until you get a joint pain relief.

Another option is to put one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water and let it stay overnight. The next morning, eat the soaked seeds.

5. Cayenne Pepper

The natural analgesic properties of cayenne pepper’s compound capsaicin, help reduce mild to moderate joint pain. In fact, this was proven by a study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand. It claims that gel with 0.0125 % capsaicin successfully reduced pain in women with knee osteoarthritis.

Mix one-half cup of warm coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper powder. Rub it on the aching area and let it stay for 20 minutes before washing it off. Repeat few times daily until your pain is gone.

Another option is to massage the affected area with capsaicin cream on a daily basis.

Note – Don’t use cayenne if you have open skin wounds.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

This vinegar helps remove toxic buildup from joints and connective tissues, thus relieving joint pain.

It is especially helpful for those with arthritis due to its alkalizing nature. Moreover, it contains high levels of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and other minerals.

Fill a cup with warm water and add 1-3 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar and a bit of honey. Mix and drink two or three times daily, before meals. Besides relieving your joint pain, this treatment is beneficial for your overall health. So, you can continue taking it even when your joint pain is relieved.

Alternatively, you can mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of olive oil and massage the affected area every day. Do this until you get relief.

7.Garlic

Garlic contains high levels of selenium and sulfur, which is why it helps people with joint pain and arthritis. Researchers claim selenium has antirheumatic properties, while sulfur helps reduce inflammation and pain in joints. Another interesting fact is that people with arthritis usually have lack of selenium in their blood.

You can use 2 or 3 garlic cloves in your cooking, or eat it raw every day. Another option is to take garlic supplements, especially if you can’t stand the strong smell and taste.

Alternatively, you can massage the affected area with a homemade oil. Add 2 garlic cloves in 2 tablespoons of sesame or olive oil and fry until they turn black. Then, strain and let the oil cool until warm.

Use it to massage on and around the affected area. Let it act for 3 hours and then rinse it odd. Repeat twice a day until you notice positive results.

8. Epsom Salt

Adding Epsom salt to your bath will help your skin absorb magnesium more efficiently. This is important when it comes to treating joint pain because lack of magnesium is often related to this type of pain. What’s more, this mineral helps relieve inflammation and detox cells.

All you have to do is add 2 cups of this salt to your warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. Have three of these baths per week until your pain is relieved.

9. Ginger

Ginger possess strong anti-inflammatory properties which is why it’s one of the best remedies for joint and muscle pain. According to studies, it helps relieve knee pain in osteoarthritis patients.

You can either use dried ginger powder or fresh ginger in your diet or drink ginger tea.

As an alternative, mix turmeric, ginger, and fenugreek powder in equal amounts. Consume one teaspoon of this combo every day in the morning and evening until you notice positive results.

10. Stinging Nettle

Even though researchers don’t know the exact reason why stinging nettle can relieve joint pain, they believe it contains compounds which help reduce inflammation. What’s more, it contains high levels of the mineral called boron which is crucial for healthy joints and bones.

Make nettle tea by steeping 2-3 teaspoons of dried leaves in a cup of hot water for about 15 minutes. After that, strain and drink. Do this 3 times daily, until the pain in your joints is relieved.

Another way to use this plant for treating joint pain is placing few fresh leaves on the aching area for about half a minute. Repeat this every day for about a week, and your pain will disappear. At the beginning, this treatment might cause a little discomfort, but it’ll gradually improve.

Note – do not use stinging nettle if you take medications for heart, blood pressure, diabetes, or blood thinners.
